Exceptional 1515 Knife – Engraving « Dionysus »
A masterpiece of fine cutlery, this 1515 knife is entirely hand-engraved by Louis Leforestier. It depicts Dionysus, god of the vine, wine, and excess, in a rich, narrative composition engraved on both sides.
Origin and Collaboration
Created in partnership with Louis Leforestier, this knife was presented in Beaune during the period of the prestigious Hospices de Beaune wine auction. This context inspired the theme chosen by the master engraver.
The Main Scene
At the center of the composition, Dionysus appears with his attributes: a panther skin, a crown of ivy, and clusters of grapes. He offers a generous bunch of grapes, adorned with leaves and tendrils, symbolizing the sharing of wine.
On the other side, a maenad steps forward to receive the grapes, embodying sacred pleasure and intoxication.
Decor and Symbols
In the background, a drapery winds around a geometric ornament reminiscent of temple architecture. The lines end in graceful acanthus leaves, while grape clusters hang here and there.
At the extremities, four satyrs animate the scene: one plays the tambourine, another staggers in drunkenness while holding onto the architecture, and the remaining two support the ornament.
On the spacer appears the thyrsus of Dionysus, decorated with a ribbon and topped with a pine cone.
Artisanal Craftsmanship
Every detail is conceived and engraved by hand by Louis Leforestier. The blade features a motif evoking a feather or a flame, and the whole offers deep plays of light and shadow.
Unique Piece
Signed by the artist, this creation is a collector’s piece that brings together technical mastery, mythological iconography, and timeless elegance.
